A guy named Graham Cluley, who is a senior technology consultant at Sophos has written an informative post on his blog, telling people about how to disable this feature in case they find it disturbing.

Facebook servers contains about zillions of photographs. And as the people in your friend list upload pictures in their albums, Facebook will try to find out if any of the pictures resemble you. And if they discover your match, or so what they believe, they may suggest your friend to tag you with your name.

While the tagging is still done by your friends, the Facebook is rather creepily pushing your friends to go ahead and tag you.

As per the complaint filed on April 15 in federal court [...]]]> In the war of the tablets, Apple Inc. hauled Samsung Electronics into court alleging that the company’s Galaxy phones and tablet computers invade patents and the trademarked look of the iPhone and iPad. As per the complaint filed on April 15 in federal court in Oakland, California, Apple alleges Samsung for infringing patents related to the way the Galaxy gadgets work, including the use of finger touch on screen, besides the patents on the shape and color of the iPad and iPhone. Samsung’s Galaxy phones and tablets which employs Google’s Android software, were specially designed to ape Apple products, Apple said in its complaint.

The litigation pits the two biggest manufacturers of tablet PCs against each other, especially when there is a huge demand for the product. Steve Jobs, Chief Executive Officer of Apple, which depends on Samsung to supply chips for the iPhone and iPad, called out Samsung when releasing the iPad 2 in March, saying that the company was among the tablet makers angling to make 2011 the “Year of Copycats.”

“What I can see is that the strategic relationship between Samsung and Apple is getting worse lately,” said Tej Kohli, CEO of Grafix Softech, a software development firm. “As Samsung gains ground with its handset and tablet business, Apple is trying to hold in Samsung.”

“It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,” said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for California-based Apple. “This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

“Samsung’s development of core technologies and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio are keys to our continued success,” said Titus Kim, a spokesman for Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung. “Samsung will respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property.”

Tej Kohli says it’s a known fact that Apple and Google are vying for dominance in the growing smartphones and tablets market. According to a research, Google’s Android operating system, which is used by Samsung, Motorola and various other companies, will account for 39.5 percent of global smartphone shipments this year, as compared to 15.7 percent for Apple,.

“The iPad still rules the tablet market, accounting for about two-thirds of sales this year,” said Tej Kohli.

In the lawsuit, Apple also claims that Samsung is infringing seven patents related to the way the gadgets responds to the hand gestures like selecting, scrolling pinching and zooming and other three patents on the design like the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad.

Apple also alleges Samsung of imitating the on-screen icons, in addition to trademarks for specific icons like the green boxes with phone or a sunflower for photos. Samsung is also accused of copying the packing style of Apple.

“Instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple’s innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple’s valuable intellectual property rights,” Apple said in the complaint.

Apple is seeking a court order blocking further use of its patents and trademarks, along with cash compensation and “reasonable funds for future corrective advertising.”

This lawsuit is only a point in case as far as the recent war amid technology companies over the growing market for smartphones is concerned. Apple is also involved in a patent fight with Motorola Mobility Holdings, as is Microsoft Corp.

The buzz around the June release of iPhone 5 had Apple users scurrying to clarify a South Korean news site’s report that Steve Jobs would launch the fifth-generation smart-phone during the Apple’s worldwide developer’s conference in San Francisco.

The aforesaid news site reported Monday that unnamed industry officials had confirmed a June release date for the iPhone 5. Accroding to the site, the release could happen on June 4 or 6 at the WWDC, which is slated for June 6 to 10.

Another thing that the report highlighted is the availability of iPhone 5 to the south Korean buyers via local carriers KT and SK Telecom before the June end.

Tej Kohli noticed that the  report also defies a couple of other iPhone related things. Earlier in March, Sony CEO Howard Stinger told Wall Street Journal that a camera sensor plant had been crippled after the March Tohuku earthquake, causing delay in the shipment of parts.

Furthermore, if one gives credence to another report that Sony will replace Omnivision for supplying cameras to for the Apple’s new iPhone version, that disclosure becomes meaningful.

What that adds to it the the latest rumour that Apple is postponing the iPhone 5 release to the fall, and its not surprising to see people being skeptical about the South Korean news report.

But the chances of South Koreans receiving a new version of iPhone just within a few months after Apple started selling iPhone 4 there are remote. Further, with iPhone4 still selling like hotcakes and possible obstacles in Apple’s ability to seamlessly integrate the 4G technology into its new handset, it doesn’t make sense for the company to launch iPhone5 in the market.

Still, if we look back at the Apple previous product release patterns appeared over the past few years for example the release cycles for Apple’s iOS-driven devices seem to be getting tighter and Apple’s iPad edition 2 was released less than a year after the first one was unveiled. So, the question is – is the company actually going to teeter its iPhone releases by 15 months or more.

“After taking all the aforesaid  things into consideration the idea of launching iPhone 5 does’nt seem too good at the moment”, says Tej Kohli.

Conceding to the wave of protests sent via online petition website Change.org, Apple has removed an iPhone app considered anti-gay by various protest groups.

The Manhattan Declaration App, which was initially approved and available at the App store in October, was developed by Manhattan Declaration, a movement launched in 2009 by a group of christian leaders espousing their condemnation of both gay marriage and abortion rights.

When approving the app, Apple initially gave it a 4+ rating implying that it had no objectionable material.

But change.org has another story to tell. The sites describe Manhattan Declaration as an app that invites people to join anti-gay and anti-choice campaigns. The app had offered a survey featuring 4 questions, including ‘Do you believe in sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman?’ ‘Do you support the right of choice regrading abortion?’ users who didn’t responded in accordance to the beliefs of the group received a message at the end telling them that they answered 0 out of 4 questions correct. The app also invited people to register, support and donate to the cause.

In contrariety to the app, change.org lunched an online petition addressed to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking that the app be removed for its ‘hateful and divisive language’. Follwing emails from about 7,700 people sent via Change.org, Apple removed the app during Thanksgiving.

“We removed the Manhattan Declaration app from the App Store because it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people.” said Apple spokeswoman in a statement.

Responding to the situation, the Manhattan Declaration said that it is confused over Apple’s decision to withdraw the app. It said that “Apple pulled the app shortly after a small but very vocal protest by those who favor gay marriage and abortion.”

Retorting to the claims that the app is homophobic and anti-gay, the group said it doesn’t think that ‘disagreement’ is ‘gay-bashing’ and insists that the language it uses “to defend traditional marriage and the sanctity of human life…is civil, non-inflammatory, and respectful”. Meanwhile, the group has written to Steve Jobs urging him to restore the app.

Is Google’s Android power tablet going to give Apple’s iPad a tough competition? It definitely will, but it will take more efforts than simply slapping the OS on a big-touch screen device. Google will need some serious rework. The android’s interface makes use of the extra pixels and real estate on a tablet, just like Apple did when it put the iOS on the iPad.

Android’s two upcoming versions – Gingerbread and Honeycomb – are going to be built keeping tablets in mind. At present, the best thing a hardware manufacturer can do is to put Android 2.2 Froyo on a tablet and rework it to handle the new form factor. But it seems Google doesn’t like that idea!

“If you want Android market on that platform, the apps just wouldn’t run, [Froyo] is just not designed for that form factor,” said Hugo Barra, Google Mobile head. As a matter of fact, Google disallows the use of its Android Market app store on tablets at the moment-Samsung’s Galaxy Tab apparently avoids this restriction by being, technically, a giant phone rather than a tablet.

The Galaxy Tab will likely be the first semi-plausible iPad alternative, in the Europe at least, where it is slated to launch next month. It seems, Samsung has reworked its built-in Android apps like email and calender by itself. But Barra is correct. The device will be constrained by the fact that third party Android apps are made for undersized smartphones, not for the tabs which are much larger.

For all the iPadversaries that have already been released or announced, the category is still in a sort of dress rehearsal stage. While people are excited about the potential of a tablet-friendly version of Android, as well as HP’s upcoming WebOS tablet, but we still haven’t seen any concrete proof that any software company except Apple has figured this stuff out.

Although Amazon.com remained tightlipped on its pricing practices, many analysts said that pricing would likely have been a point negotiated between Amazon and RIM officials. In fact, there are many dramatic examples of smartphone discounts on various websites, like the Sony Xperia X10 at AT&T being available for $80 at Wirefly, since its launch on Monday for $250.

Blogger Seth Weintraub on Fortune.com asserted that “every BlackBerry ever invented is heavily discounted.”

What’s more, a bold 9700 phone from AT&T is priced at 1 cent on one of the Amazon.com’s pages for Blackberry devices.

The recent changes in the Facebook are all about the word “like”. The social networking site in the process of adding a few updates to its service, and they focus primarily on the ‘like’ button.

As yet, the announcements made by the company has concentrated on what’s within its website. Facebook has officially changed the wordage on its pages, which are used by celebrities and companies. Now, instead of clicking “become a fan” button on a Facebook page, you can simply click “like” button, just as you do to like a status update, or photograph for that matter.

Although this may look like a minor difference to the user, but it represents something far more significant.

The altered wording is followed by a stronger push to get users ‘like’ public pages. Users will automatically start receiving Facebook pages suggestions based on the things you’ve mentioned in your profile like your favorite movie or a brand. On accepting the Facebook’s auto-generated invitations, the plain text in your profile will be replaced by a link to the page you just ‘liked’, making it accessible to everyone.

“Once you make your choice, any text you’d previously had for the current city, hometown, education and work, and likes and interests sections of your profile will be replaced by links to these pages,” Facebook engineer Alex Li explains in an official blog posting. “If you would still like to express yourself with free-form text, you can still use the ‘Bio’ section of your profile.”

Sounds confusing? Hold on for its about to get even more perplexing.

Imagine a universal ‘like’ button! Yes, the Facebook is mulling over plans to expand its “like”trend all across the cyberspace. This not-yet-confirmed plan would enable third party blog and news websites to add Facebook “Like” button on their own pages.

The new york time explains it as follows: “Similar to the Facebook ‘Share’ buttons that are already popular with many Web sites, the ‘Like’ buttons will make it easier for Web publishers to offer more social experiences, in essence allowing Facebook friends to enjoy those sites together.”

And what’s more?

“While ‘Share’ buttons allow users to post links that their friends see on their Facebook pages, those links are fleeting,” The Times says. “The ‘Like’ button will allow Facebook to keep a record of what a user linked to, providing the company with ever more data about people’s preferences. Facebook, in turn, plans to share that data with Web publishers, so that a magazine Web site, for instance, may be able to show users all the articles that their friends like.”

While the Facebook has not directly denied or confirmed the imminent launch of a universal “like” button, it is saying some reports about the feature are outright wrong. A report publish in the financial times which stated that the web side system would keep track of the user’s behavior around the web so as to offer behaviorally targeted advertisements back at Facebook.com. However, a Facebook spokesperson refuted the reports as totally baseless. She said that the company has no plans to change its ‘ad offerings or ad policies.’

It is expected that Facebook would unveil its universal like button at its F8 conference on Wednesday.

February 9 marked a new epoch in the history of social networking when the world’s most popular search engine launched Google Buzz, a new service the company is promoting as a ‘new approach to sharing.’
Integrated into the Google’s already popular gmail email service, buzz is designed to counter the increasing power of social networking sites like Facebook, and twitter, plus in an attempt to make Google a more central online venue for users.

Google launched this new service as a means of using its algorithmic might to penetrate the highly crowded social media infiltrating internet users’ online profiles. The service revolves around the idea of helping users organize their online activities in a better way.

“It’s becoming harder and harder to find signal in the noise,” said Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice president of product management during a launch event.
Google is rolling out Buzz to all gmail subscribers with a new tab which appears under the inbox tab within their gmail account. Google has also revealed plans to monetize buzz by integrating it into its business service.

How it works?

Buzz explores a person’s list of contacts and creates an auto-follow list of people they interact with regularly through email. It also allow users the option of sharing status updates with either all of their contacts or with a private group.

Users can also share links and see what their friends are posting to sites like YouTube, Flickr and Twitter while being able to access everything within their Gmail window.

Besides this, buzz enables people to send a direct message to someone using the twitter’s popular ‘@ format’. What’s more? Buzz also gives users posts and links to other useful content based on what their friends are talking about or the content of their own buzz. When anyone comments on your buzz the Gmail sends you an email which includes all the comments and images related to the buzz you’ve posted.

Users can access buzz through their cell phones in three ways – first, through the company’s standard Google mobile homepage, second, from a special buzz application, which is available for only iPhone and Android users at present and third, through Google’s mobile maps application which is available only for Nokia Symbian, Windows Mobile and android users currently.

If you’re using a Smartphone with built in GPS technology, buzz will geotag posts with a user’s current location and will also show the posts of other people using buzz in your location.

By introducing a service with more personal relevance for web users and which will encourage them to spend more time on Google’s sites, the company is expecting to play a major role in the social networking.
And as far as the question of Buzz posing threat to Facebook or twitter will depend on the users’ response this latest Gmail feature and how well it blends the experience between Mobile and Computer devices.

3. No multitasking: Even though apple has rearranged iPhone’s OS in a new way to work on the new apple iPad, it still fails to run the background processes. This again is a big detractor.

4. No Verizon: Verizon Wireless is not providing the 3G wireless service which comes as a choice with iPad. Instead of Verizon, AT&T is providing this service.

5. No wide screen display: Although you can watch HD movies on its 9.7-inches display, it fails to match the 16:9 standard screen dimension that many of the other modern devices support.

6. No Mac OS: The iPad works on a new processor A4, manufactured by the Apple itself. It runs at 1GHz, which appears suitable for an iPhone OS, but it doesn’t run the more efficient full OS X, something which would have really made the device rock.

7. No GPS: There is an accelerometer for a great gaming experience, but there is no GPS. This means Google Maps will have to rely on 3G and/or Wi-fi to locate the iPad. Too much to replace your smartphone.

8. Enough Storage: iPad can sync content with iTunes and users can add/remove content as they wish, but the maximum space of 64 GB is not sufficient, especially for those who are a lot into games, movies and music.

10. No HDM1: It doesn’t feature an HDM1 port, which makes it incompatible with all the modern HDTVs.
