Tej Kohli is a well known technocrat with years of experience in technology related things. Today, on this blog, Tej Kohli shares the news about a new Facebook Technology which has not been taken too well by the critics.

Among the latest offering from the Facebook is is new facial recognition technology, which has been launched in couple of the countries outside US. And as usual, the default setting is opt in, instead of opt out. This, in other words, mean that if you don’t want to be automatically tagged on pictures, you had better inform Facebook.

A guy named Graham Cluley, who is a senior technology consultant at Sophos has written an informative post on his blog, telling people about how to disable this feature in case they find it disturbing.

Facebook servers contains about zillions of photographs. And as the people in your friend list upload pictures in their albums, Facebook will try to find out if any of the pictures resemble you. And if they discover your match, or so what they believe, they may suggest your friend to tag you with your name.

While the tagging is still done by your friends, the Facebook is rather creepily pushing your friends to go ahead and tag you.

Tej Kohli would like to bring to your notice that Facebook doesn’t give users any right to pre-approve the tags. Instead, its your responsibility to untag yourself in any photo.

As Mr. Cluley explains, if you don’t see a setting “Suggest photos of me to friends” it simply means your profile has not been updated.

The whole world is celebrating the death of the number one terrorist Osama Bin Laden and Google is the proof for it. Tej Kohli shares the report how Google searches became the hottest search term across all its properties.

Bin Laden, the most wanted terrorists ever, became the most searched person on Google as soon as the news of his death broke out. Tej Kohli blog brings you how this news triggered the one million percentage increase in the Google search for this man’s name.

As soon as the President Barack Obama confirmed the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death it triggered the highest sustained rate of tweets with more than 3000 tweets being posted per second between 10:45 pm to 2.20 am EST.

According to the search statistics released by Google earlier this evening, a one million percentage increase was seen in the searches for ‘bin laden’ between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm. The news went out through the official Google twitter account.

The first announcement came on twitter at 9:45 om EST saying that president Barack Obama would make a brief announcement at 10:30 pm. While the public address was delayed by nearly one hour, but thousands of tweets were already piling up at this hour with the speculations as to what the president had to say. The news created such an impact that even the ‘royal wedding’, which was the most searched thing till Friday, was forgotten by Sunday, eclipsed by the much bigger news.

In the war of the tablets, Apple Inc. hauled Samsung Electronics into court alleging that the company’s Galaxy phones and tablet computers invade patents and the trademarked look of the iPhone and iPad. Tej Kohli blog brings you the complete report.

As per the complaint filed on April 15 in federal court in Oakland, California, Apple alleges Samsung for infringing patents related to the way the Galaxy gadgets work, including the use of finger touch on screen, besides the patents on the shape and color of the iPad and iPhone. Samsung’s Galaxy phones and tablets which employs Google’s Android software, were specially designed to ape Apple products, Apple said in its complaint.

The litigation pits the two biggest manufacturers of tablet PCs against each other, especially when there is a huge demand for the product. Steve Jobs, Chief Executive Officer of Apple, which depends on Samsung to supply chips for the iPhone and iPad, called out Samsung when releasing the iPad 2 in March, saying that the company was among the tablet makers angling to make 2011 the “Year of Copycats.”

“What I can see is that the strategic relationship between Samsung and Apple is getting worse lately,” said Tej Kohli, CEO of Grafix Softech, a software development firm. “As Samsung gains ground with its handset and tablet business, Apple is trying to hold in Samsung.”

“It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging,” said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for California-based Apple. “This kind of blatant copying is wrong, and we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property when companies steal our ideas.”

“Samsung’s development of core technologies and strengthening our intellectual property portfolio are keys to our continued success,” said Titus Kim, a spokesman for Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung. “Samsung will respond actively to this legal action taken against us through appropriate legal measures to protect our intellectual property.”

Tej Kohli says it’s a known fact that Apple and Google are vying for dominance in the growing smartphones and tablets market. According to a research, Google’s Android operating system, which is used by Samsung, Motorola and various other companies, will account for 39.5 percent of global smartphone shipments this year, as compared to 15.7 percent for Apple,.

“The iPad still rules the tablet market, accounting for about two-thirds of sales this year,” said Tej Kohli.

In the lawsuit, Apple also claims that Samsung is infringing seven patents related to the way the gadgets responds to the hand gestures like selecting, scrolling pinching and zooming and other three patents on the design like the flat black face of the iPhone and iPad.

Apple also alleges Samsung of imitating the on-screen icons, in addition to trademarks for specific icons like the green boxes with phone or a sunflower for photos. Samsung is also accused of copying the packing style of Apple.

“Instead of pursuing independent product development, Samsung has chosen to slavishly copy Apple’s innovative technology, distinctive user interfaces, and elegant and distinctive product and packaging design, in violation of Apple’s valuable intellectual property rights,” Apple said in the complaint.

Apple is seeking a court order blocking further use of its patents and trademarks, along with cash compensation and “reasonable funds for future corrective advertising.”

This lawsuit is only a point in case as far as the recent war amid technology companies over the growing market for smartphones is concerned. Apple is also involved in a patent fight with Motorola Mobility Holdings, as is Microsoft Corp.

Rumours are doing rounds that Apple may launch the fifth edition of iPhone on some date in June this year. Tej Kohli blog brings the complete report for its readers.

The buzz around the June release of iPhone 5 had Apple users scurrying to clarify a South Korean news site’s report that Steve Jobs would launch the fifth-generation smart-phone during the Apple’s worldwide developer’s conference in San Francisco.

The aforesaid news site reported Monday that unnamed industry officials had confirmed a June release date for the iPhone 5. Accroding to the site, the release could happen on June 4 or 6 at the WWDC, which is slated for June 6 to 10.

Another thing that the report highlighted is the availability of iPhone 5 to the south Korean buyers via local carriers KT and SK Telecom before the June end.

Tej Kohli noticed that the report also defies a couple of other iPhone related things. Earlier in March, Sony CEO Howard Stinger told Wall Street Journal that a camera sensor plant had been crippled after the March Tohuku earthquake, causing delay in the shipment of parts.

Furthermore, if one gives credence to another report that Sony will replace Omnivision for supplying cameras to for the Apple’s new iPhone version, that disclosure becomes meaningful.

What that adds to it the the latest rumour that Apple is postponing the iPhone 5 release to the fall, and its not surprising to see people being skeptical about the South Korean news report.

But the chances of South Koreans receiving a new version of iPhone just within a few months after Apple started selling iPhone 4 there are remote. Further, with iPhone4 still selling like hotcakes and possible obstacles in Apple’s ability to seamlessly integrate the 4G technology into its new handset, it doesn’t make sense for the company to launch iPhone5 in the market.

Still, if we look back at the Apple previous product release patterns appeared over the past few years for example the release cycles for Apple’s iOS-driven devices seem to be getting tighter and Apple’s iPad edition 2 was released less than a year after the first one was unveiled. So, the question is – is the company actually going to teeter its iPhone releases by 15 months or more.

“After taking all the aforesaid things into consideration the idea of launching iPhone 5 does’nt seem too good at the moment”, says Tej Kohli.

Today, on Tej Kohli Blog we will discuss about how crisis in Japan may lift the oil and natural gas prices. Tej Kohli brings the detailed report.

Hours after the Japan’s disastrous earthquake, oil prices took a tumble Friday and again on Monday. However, the day closed at a higher price as analysts foretold prices may continue to rise when the country begins recovering and rebuilding.

The loss of several major nuclear plants in a country where one-fourth of the power supply comes from them will compel power generators to look for an alternate energy source like oil, natural gas and coal.

On Monday, US benchmark crude rose 3 cents to settle down at $101.19 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after plummeting below $99 earlier in the day. Natural gas rose by 2.5 cents and reached $3.91 per million British thermal units.

According to Barclay’s Capital the dire nuclear power situation in Japan makes it likely oil and gas prices will rise further.

In a desperate attempt to reduce the chances of meltdown, engineers used sea-water to cool nuclear reactors in quake-stricken plants. This destroys the reactors completely, implying a long-term loss of nuclear power capacity.

“Further, with nuclear power already having been a highly contentious issue in Japan, it seems likely that building any political consensus for further nuclear development in Japan will now be extremely difficult,” Barclay’s said.

In the shorter term, plenty of supplies in the U.S. may reduce upward pressure on crude prices. U.S. oil stocks are expected to continue to build this week according to analysts surveyed by Platt’s and other news agencies.

Weekly oil data from the federal government’s Energy Information Administration and the industry’s American Petroleum Institute is expected show a buildup of about 2.1 million barrels in U.S. commercial crude stocks for the reporting week that ended last Friday, analysts polled by Platts said Monday.

Coming from one of the most prominent tech companies in the world, Google’s Chrome OS could potentially be the next big thing of the coming year. Keeping its promise to deliver an unparallelled operating system experience for consumers and enterprises alike, Google is all set to take the computing world to a next level with is Chrome OS, or so it seems. Tej Kohli states top 10 reasons that may spell the doom for Google’s much hyped OS.

“Amid Google’s efforts to improve its web-based platform, and preparing for a wide release in consumer markets, only one question that remains – whether it will be a hit or not?” asks Tej Kohli. Looking at the bright side, the new Chrome OS does feature some very novel ideas that might win consumer’s heart. But on the flipside, consumers might instantly recognize that it is facing several external pressures apart from some serious limitations of its own design that could considerably affect its odds of surviving in the practically monopolistic OS market.

Considering these facts, there is a strong likelihood that Google’s Chrome OS platform will fail to make its mark. Tej Kohli points out the probable reasons:

1. Capability: It goes without saying that user will just the Chrome OS platform by what it lets them do. Apparently, there’s quite a bit of stuff they can do such as check email, internet surfing, edit office documents and several basic tasks they enjoy at present on their desktop based OS platforms. But on a closer look, it appears that they cannot really do as much as they can do on Mac or Windows OS, which are way more powerful and offers some key features like HD video editing and encoding, which will not be as easy to use on Chrome OS.

2. Replacing Windows is an uphill battle: It is a well established fact that Microsoft’s windows rules the roost when it comes to the most commonly used operating systems worldwide. And there is a very bleak chance that Chrome OS might be able to change that. Microsoft is used by both domestic and corporate consumers alike, and its hard for Google to convince them for switching to Chrome OS.

3. The corporate considerations : Speaking of the corporates, it looks like one prominent area where Google’s OS will fizzle. The corporates demand several features in an OS such as power, software compatibility, security and much more, which Chrome OS might not be able to offer. Corporates have defined the success of failure of many software and hardware platforms for over years. And there is no scope of this changing anytime in the near future. So, its clear that if Google fails to crate an impact on the corporate world, it would automatically fail elsewhere.

4. Do we really need it? : As the world is still trying to recover from the setback of recession, people are not really to keen about trying a new OS that for now wont work as well as one they are already using. While it is acceptable for a smartphone, but for a PC this OS like perhaps an unacceptable alternative for those seeking a singular powerful gadget to spend their treasured money compared to an OS they know and have been using for ages.

5. Vendor support is crucial : In the unavailability of vendor support, Chrome OS could be derailed sooner than imagined. Though companies like Acer, Samsung and many others are currently planning in supporting the system, but how far it goes in the long run is yet to be seen. If they don’t see the OS selling as well as they expected, they will switch back without a second thought.

6. Are users ready? : As Tej Kohli stated earlier, first of all users need to decide whether they really need Chrome OS or not? But at the same time, Google must also find out whether the users are ready for it? Apart from the tech lovers, Google must consider the mainstream customers, who over the years have grown accustomed to using Windows and Mac OS X. What is that which would persuade them make the big switch.

7. Software challenges : Google is assured that users will be able to access many of the programs they want from their online Chrome app store. However, the operating system wont support Windows Apps designed for the desktop, which automatically rules out corporate users. Hence, Google’s OS will fall short when it comes to software compatibility.

8. Hardware concerns : The software issues of chrome will also span its hardware market. Mac and Windows OS users want to be able to connect using their USB devises to Chrome OS devices and get them to work. The only catch here is that it is possible only when hardware vendors make their products Google OS compatible.

9. Competition from Android : Chrome OS is launched as a lightweight OS, potentially making it useful for customers using netbooks and tablets. Here’s Google has got competition from its own camp, the Android, which is capable of running effectively on those devices. While Google doesn’t see its two OS as competitors, but whether consumers does or not, only time will tell.

10. Data plan limitations : Being a web based OS, Google’s Chrome OS needs an always connected experience for users. For home users that wont be much a big issue as they can easily connect using LAN or Wi-fi. The real problem would arise when they would be away from the home, somewhere where there is no Wi-Fi. Under those circumstances, users would resort to 3G, which of course comes at a cost. Now the question is, although more consumers that ever are paying for data plans these days, but would they be ready to bear that extra monthly cost?

Read on to know more…

Conceding to the wave of protests sent via online petition website Change.org, Apple has removed an iPhone app considered anti-gay by various protest groups.

The Manhattan Declaration App, which was initially approved and available at the App store in October, was developed by Manhattan Declaration, a movement launched in 2009 by a group of christian leaders espousing their condemnation of both gay marriage and abortion rights.

When approving the app, Apple initially gave it a 4+ rating implying that it had no objectionable material.

But change.org has another story to tell. The sites describe Manhattan Declaration as an app that invites people to join anti-gay and anti-choice campaigns. The app had offered a survey featuring 4 questions, including ‘Do you believe in sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman?’ ‘Do you support the right of choice regrading abortion?’ users who didn’t responded in accordance to the beliefs of the group received a message at the end telling them that they answered 0 out of 4 questions correct. The app also invited people to register, support and donate to the cause.

In contrariety to the app, change.org lunched an online petition addressed to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking that the app be removed for its ‘hateful and divisive language’. Follwing emails from about 7,700 people sent via Change.org, Apple removed the app during Thanksgiving.

“We removed the Manhattan Declaration app from the App Store because it violates our developer guidelines by being offensive to large groups of people.” said Apple spokeswoman in a statement.

Responding to the situation, the Manhattan Declaration said that it is confused over Apple’s decision to withdraw the app. It said that “Apple pulled the app shortly after a small but very vocal protest by those who favor gay marriage and abortion.”

Retorting to the claims that the app is homophobic and anti-gay, the group said it doesn’t think that ‘disagreement’ is ‘gay-bashing’ and insists that the language it uses “to defend traditional marriage and the sanctity of human life…is civil, non-inflammatory, and respectful”. Meanwhile, the group has written to Steve Jobs urging him to restore the app.

Planning to buy a new Laptop, then you might find this review by Tej Kohli helpful. A review of Dell XPS 14…

So, yeah the Dell’s XPS brand is back with a new family of laptops powered by Intel’s Calpella platform and featuring Nvidia’s Optimus technology. At this point if some of you are wondering what am I talking about, because the XPS never went anywhere, you are both right and wrong. Although the XPS moniker never waned completely, it was relegated to Dell’s Studio range and XPS One all-in-one desktops for a while.

Dell says they have decided to simplify their brand structure in response to their consumer’s demand. After realizing the XPS brand has a glorious past and strong association with performance, the brand is re-entering the market with the aforesaid laptop series. In this post Tej Kohli will review the Dell XPS 14 (L401x) that features a 14 inch LED screen, Intel Core i5 460M processor, and Nvidia GE Force GT 420M Graphics. While its smallest of the latest laptops, but has many of the same features as XPS 15 and XPS 17 including Nvidia’s 3D Tv Play Software which allow users to tether their laptop to a 3D HDTV and watch movies, photos, play games in stereoscopic 3D.

At only 14 inches wide, the Dell XPS 14 is almost the same size as netbook, but overall it offers much more than a netbook. And weighing less than five and a half pounds, you wont have much trouble carrying it around. In all likelihood, the only feature that we can really complain about is the missing USB 3.0 support.

Given below are its features and specifications by Tej Kohli in a tabular form :

The newly launched Internet Explorer 9 Beta by Microsoft come packed with many innovate features including, site specific jump lists, task bar shortcuts, a brand new layout and and a unified search and address bar. With the latest version of IE, Microsoft has tried to extend the browser’s compatibility with present day web technologies like HTML 5 and CSS 3. Microsoft claims that IE9 is faster than its predecessors as it maximizes your PC’s hardware components, particularly your graphics processing unit.

That’s not all, the new browser has managed to win over critics for being a fast, attractive and easy to use internet browser. But the sad part is the IE9 is not available to XP users.

Tej Kohli gives a brief overview of the IE9’s top features:

Sites As Apps

With IE9 you can turn your favorite websites into launch icons on your taskbar, essentially generating web apps. All you need to do is grab the tab of the website you want to visit, drag it down and drop over the task bar. An icon will be created on your taskbar picking the site’s favicon as image.

Jumplists

Another great addition to IE9 is the jumplist feature. Once you’ve pinned a site to your taskbar, just right click on the icon to see the shortcuts for that website. For example if you’ve pinned facebook, you will find shortcuts to newsfeed, messages, events and friendlist. In Twitter you can write a new tweet, see your direct messages, mentions, favorites and search.

Look Right

IE9 has simplified its controls and shifted the home, settings and bookmarks icons over the top right of your browser window. The bookmarks icon has tabs for your bookmarked sites, browsing history and RSS feeds.

Unified search and address bar

Like Google Chrome, Microsoft has also incorporated a unified search and address bar in IE9 called the One Box. The default search engine is Bing with options to switch to Google and Yahoo. Other search providers you can use are Facebook, Wikipedia and many others.

If your search provider is not on the list, you can also add your own search provider.

Other Features

Like Mozilla IE9 too has a new download manager that allows users to pause, restart and cancel downloads. In a nutshell, IE9 Beta is a great next-gen web browser and its worth giving a try if you have Vista or Windows 7 on your PC.

If you’re excited about the new Android tablets, don’t be – so, comes the announcement by Google. Tej Kohli Blog brings you the complete story:

Is Google’s Android power tablet going to give Apple’s iPad a tough competition? It definitely will, but it will take more efforts than simply slapping the OS on a big-touch screen device. Google will need some serious rework. The android’s interface makes use of the extra pixels and real estate on a tablet, just like Apple did when it put the iOS on the iPad.

Android’s two upcoming versions – Gingerbread and Honeycomb – are going to be built keeping tablets in mind. At present, the best thing a hardware manufacturer can do is to put Android 2.2 Froyo on a tablet and rework it to handle the new form factor. But it seems Google doesn’t like that idea!

“If you want Android market on that platform, the apps just wouldn’t run, [Froyo] is just not designed for that form factor,” said Hugo Barra, Google Mobile head. As a matter of fact, Google disallows the use of its Android Market app store on tablets at the moment-Samsung’s Galaxy Tab apparently avoids this restriction by being, technically, a giant phone rather than a tablet.

The Galaxy Tab will likely be the first semi-plausible iPad alternative, in the Europe at least, where it is slated to launch next month. It seems, Samsung has reworked its built-in Android apps like email and calender by itself. But Barra is correct. The device will be constrained by the fact that third party Android apps are made for undersized smartphones, not for the tabs which are much larger.

For all the iPadversaries that have already been released or announced, the category is still in a sort of dress rehearsal stage. While people are excited about the potential of a tablet-friendly version of Android, as well as HP’s upcoming WebOS tablet, but we still haven’t seen any concrete proof that any software company except Apple has figured this stuff out.
