June 2010 brought the most awaited super-gizmo of the year – The iPhone 4 by Apple! While Apple claims it “the biggest leap since the original iPhone”, most buyers are apprehensive about shelling out $199 and subscribing with AT&T for another 2 years without even knowing what they are getting!

With more than 1500 upgrades available, what leaves us wondering is which of these are really important. Although it wont be wrong to say that iPhone 4 has surpassed every other smart phone by leaps and bounds, but if you really discard your iPhone 3, you should know what is fluff and what is not? And above anything else, does it make financial sense to buy one?

1. It is slimmer – Almost 25% thinner than its previous version, iPhone 4 measures only 0.37 inch and looks incredibly thin!

2. Improved Screen Resolution – boasting of Apple’s Retina display, iPhone 4 offers an amazing 960×640 pixel resolution, which is four times greater than iPhone 3GS. Even the net HTC Evo 4G has a screen resolution of 800×480 pixels. Steve Jobs of APPLE Inc. claimed that the Retina display of iPhone 4 offer better resolution than naked human eyes. With this high resolution, the users will now be able to see smoother lines and richer details. The quality of information on a 960×640 pixel screen is practically comparable with most printed magazines.

3. Front facing Camera – apart from the rear facing camera, iPhone 4 features an additional 5-megapixel front facing camera, both of which are equipped with LED flash and are capable of recording HD video. And as an extra treat, it has a photo and geotagging feature.

4. Multitasking – One of the major advantages of Apple’s new operating system iOS4, also called iPhone OS 4.0 is that it is capable of running third party applications simultaneously. Apple has laid out 7 multitasking services which will work with iOS4. These are background audio streaming, VOIP, background location, local notifications, push notifications, task completion and fast app switching. However, iPhone4 is not the only phone that can multitask, many android devices are also equally good. You can also upgrade your iPhone 3GS to the new iOS4, rather than shelling out for a new phone.

5. Better Video calling – Despite creating a no-so-good impression during its demo at WWDC, Apple’s FaceTime feature is already getting rave reviews from the critics. Laptop Mag calls the cutting-edge video calling application elegant and easy to use. It said that Apple has designed not just a phone that enables a smooth video chat, but has also taken the software experiences into its own hands to make it an integral part of the OS, which is as easy to use and any other feature in iOS4.

Longer battery life – the new, longer-lasting battery of the iPhone 4 promises to deliver up to 7 hours of 3G talk time, 6 hours of 3G internet browsing, 10 hours of web surfing on wi-fi, 10 hours of video playback, 40 hours of audio playback , and a whopping 300 hours of standby time. As compared to the HTC Evo 4G and Droid Incredible, the iPhone 4 boasts the longest battery life.

7. Get an upgrade from AT&T – Many were unhappy to discover that iPhone 4 would be tethered to AT & T, which is notorious for its erratic service and the recent step to quash unlimited data plans. Whether AT&T’s service will improve remains to be seen, the company is offering what Apple describes as a generous offer, that says if you are an AT&T subscriber and eligible for an upgrade anytime in 2010, you can buy the iPhone 4 on launch day at the subsidized cost of $199 or $299, given that you renew your contract.

8. It is Faster – the iPhone 4 is powered with the same A4 processor as the iPad, which ensures to make the iPhone faster than ever. While its hard to perceive the differences between an iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs, but the former definitely looks snappier, almost as fast as iPad.

9. Gyroscope – iPhone 4 features a multi-axis gyroscope, which allows the phone to measure velocity, as well as orientation. This will make is gaming experience more realistic and engaging.
